Pre-treatment Technology

In the mechanical pre-treatment stage, food waste, faeces and other solids settle as primary sludge and are removed from the wastewater

System S&P® GmbH produces supplementary products, as well as equipping our own projects with complementary technology from well-known manufacturers for:

  • Pumping, transporting and distributing (scoop wheels, pumps, flow dividers),
  • Removing solids and particles by means of screens,
  • Sand filters/grease traps,
  • Pre-aeration and homogenisation tanks,
  • Buffering tanks (scoop wheels, pumps, agitators),
  • pH correction/neutralization systems,
  • Diversion systems,
  • Equipment for sedimentation tanks (deflectors and scumboards, primary and floating sludge pumps, fixed and height-adjustable crane tubulars),
  • Manhole and tank equipment (agitators, pumping stations, railings, covers, vents, ...)

All products are available both as a separate component or a module integrated in the system, depending on customer requirements.

In the mechanical pre-treatment stage, food waste, faeces and other solids settle as primary sludge and are removed from the wastewater. Flotates such as fat can also be removed. Different methods are used, depending on the size of the plant. Possible transport options for the substances removed must take into account individual stacking, stabilization and disposal requirements.

Provided the necessary local recycling infrastructure is available, pre-treatment is usually recommended for smaller plants. Pre-treatment can be distributed over one or more tanks and can often function simultaneously as integrated sludge storage.

Depending on the local conditions, sedimentation tanks can reduce organic load by up to one third. If the plant operates in a combined sewer system, i.e. combined inflow of rainwater and wastewater, a sand filter and at least one primary sludge pump are recommended.

Other pre-treatment options include screens, sieves, sand filters and grease traps. For plants without the necessary local recycling infrastructure, concepts are often implemented in which only stabilized biological excess sludge is produced. At least one fine screen would be necessary, followed by a sand and grease trap, depending on the chosen post-treatment technology.

Pre-existing, non-aerated clarification ponds can be retrofitted and brought up to date using System S&P® rotating biological contactors (RBC), significantly improving effluent results.
